Down the Garden Path

late August 2004

The dogs and I took a morning stroll through various parts of the garden, maybe you would like to join us...
This Begonia bed is immediately in front of the house...

They provide lovely late color when some parts are getting a bit worn.

Walking down the steps we have a bed of mixed Impatiens....have been collecting seed pods from these every few days...

Across to the top of the front perennial bed, the path goes through the center...

It overlooks the driveway and the rose arbor...

The long reign of daylilies in this bed is drawing to a close.
A peek past the rose arbor('Linda Campbell' at the top) into the "wilds" of rudbeckia and many things. We could keep a 'gardener' busy here for quite some time!
Just below and to the right is a planting of purple Buddleia, a PeeGee hydrangea and some 'volunteer' tiger lilies....

The area we call the 'gulley' is a long bed with a path through part of the way...it was desperately weedy when this pic was taken...

One of the realities of gardening-life! The other reality is that Bill weeded it after I took the pic! The leaning lily here is a group of 'Casa Blanca'

A group of rudbeckia and the purple - leafed perilla...

The late lilies and phlox have been quite nice along here...
..... ( 'Tom Pouce' is on the right)

Past this path and to a shady part is a leaning 'StarGazer'...peeking out from an 'Annabelle' hydrangea.  Both plants would be a bit happier with more sun!

Dog companion Jodi is investigating the hostas and astilbe..... this bed under the white pines is also home to a couple of Umbrella bamboo ( Fargesia murielae).

The next part of the stroll will take us to "the back forty"...

All this walking before breakfast! I don't always get here before the sun has made some things a bit bright.
This heap of rudbeckia and phlox is on the way to the veggie garden/nursery bed to the left. The garlic has been harvested and some new buckwheat planted in various bare spots.

From the top of the veggie area you get an overview of a "new" planting area just done yesterday ( well, partly done)...

Bill has spent part of today digging in the manure topping with his trusty spade.
This is our spring 'Claymore' bed with the new bed ( we need a moniker for this one!)behind...

Paths go right and left around this long bed we call the 'Octoberfest' It has been quite a nice addition to this area in its first year.

Tire tracks (from hauling manure) on the grass path between some rhodies and the long bed.

This path goes along the 2001 Rhodie nursery bed to the left....

Eventually we get to an area of mature Rhodies and a large perennial bed area with lots of phlox and just now 'Casa Blanca'( see inset)...there is that sun!

The path to the house goes past(through) our back rose arbor...

... This bed is a bit dull these days, although the yellow/blue on the left is quite vibrant... ' Moonbeam' coreopsis with 'Blue Wave' petunias...
coreopsis and petunias

The Russian Sage at the top of this bed is OK, but difficult to photograph ...

The scramble of perennial Sweet Peas are on the 'poddy' side... the 'Limelight' artemesia is on the invasive side!

The right side of this bed has a nursery bed area with lots of stuff ....  interesting foliage too. Seen here are varigated Dogwoods from cuttings, some Sedum, seedling Magnolias, February Daphne seedlings, and a baby Japanese Maple.

Guess that about gets us back to a doorway and a planter with 'Minette' Basil.
